The Third Thursdays webinar series is designed exclusively for AIP Member Societies and Affiliates. These webinars will provide valuable insights on topics critical to our community. Each session will be tailored for different parts of your organization: staff, volunteer leadership, or both.

Registration is limited to communities of the AIP Member Societies and Affiliates . All webinars are free but attendees must pre-register.

February 20, 2025: International Year of Quantum Engagement

Will Thomas of AIP started by sharing AIP’s work on a planned project to examine knowledge of the 1920s quantum revolution and its evolution. AIP is looking to connect with societies to make the Archive for the History of Quantum Physics more accessible and to coordinate among scholars and others who are working on the contemporary history of quantum science and technology. Claudia Fracchiolla of APS gave context to IYQ Global and share insights on the role that APS played in organizing IYQ. She also outlined the activities APS will be holding to celebrate the year. Charles “Chip” Eddy of AVS; highlighted planned IYQ activities across AVS including special topic collections in AVS Quantum Science journal (AVS/AIPP), workshops and mini-symposiums at AVS-71 International Symposium, International speaker engagements, webinars and more. And Kevin Probasco of SPIE shared all the efforts SPIE is championing or sponsoring during IYQ.

January 16, 2025: Revamping and Implementing Codes of Conduct

Jeanette Russo and Patience Nelson, from APS, recounted the APS journey to develop their Code of Conduct. In their presentation they shared what lead to the reevaluation of their code of conduct, how is has been implemented, and led a robust discussion. Attendees gained insight into the practical considerations that come from enforcing new codes and frameworks for thinking about evaluating their own society’s work.  

December 10, 2024: Enterprise Risk Management

In this high-impact workshop, Matt Loeb, former Chief Transformation Officer at AIP, guided participants through the essentials of ERM, equipping you with the knowledge to, identify disruptive risks and game-changing opportunities, develop strategic responses to mitigate threats and capitalize on potential gains, and seamlessly integrate risk management into your society’s strategic planning, operations, and financial management This interactive session was designed to jumpstart your society’s ERM program, providing you with a robust framework to navigate uncertainties and drive sustainable growth. The content was specifically designed for senior staff leadership of a society in charge of strategic direction and stewardship of society resources.

November 21, 2024: Understanding the Skills in Your Organization: A Case Study from AIP’s Talent Study

Do you have a true understanding of the talent available in your organization? AIP’s recent Talent Study provides a case study in how use of Success Profiles can help your organization understand your needs and better support your staff and volunteers. Our interactive session walked participants through the journey and how you might apply some of the lessons learned to improve recruitment, engagement, development and (when relevant) compensation of the staff and volunteer talent of your society. The interactive session provided a deeper look at Success Profiles and how you might consider adopting the practice for your organization for both employees and volunteers. Content is most appropriate for society leadership as well as HR teams.

October 10, 2024: How Technical Libraries Benefit Society Membership

Our October Third Thursday webinar focused on how societies benefit their membership by providing “technical libraries.” Our discussion looked at the different ways our Member Societies provide training on the latest techniques and advances in science. This could new laboratory techniques, curriculum for teaching advances in your field, and other resources to help your members advance their studies in their respective fields. Brief case studies from across the Federation led into a discussion on how providing these resources affects member engagement, leading strategies for keeping the content fresh, and how best to distribute and market these libraries.

September 19, 2024: Best Practices for Convening Sustainable Annual Meetings

This session gives practical advice on how scientific societies can work with their venues, vendors, members, and leadership to reduce the environmental impact of their meetings while respecting the mission and budgetary realities of putting on conferences. This session unveiled new content developed through an AIP Venture Grant to the American Meteorological Society to support their innovative work researching, implementing, and sharing expertise in making meetings more green and sustainable.
