FYI Deep Dive: CHIPS and Science Act
More CHIPS and Science Act coverage
DOD announced the eight regional “Hubs” that will form the core of the Microelectronics Commons it is establishing using the $2 billion appropriated to the department by the CHIPS and Science Act.
Appropriators’ fiscal year 2024 budget proposals for the Department of Energy’s Office of Science fall well short of the Biden administration’s request for a 9% increase. Consequently, a major proposed expansion of fusion R&D programs is unlikely to materialize this year and certain other activities are apt to be squeezed under tight program toplines.
The Department of Defense is implementing a process for assessing risks posed by researchers’ ties to foreign countries of concern and rejecting grant proposals for which it deems the risks cannot be satisfactorily reduced.
The Commerce Department’s new CHIPS R&D Office is preparing to stand up the National Semiconductor Technology Center funded by last year’s CHIPS and Science Act. Complementary initiatives are also underway across several federal agencies.
