About the American Institute of Physics

About the American Institute of Physics

Since the time of Galileo, practitioners of the physical sciences have given humankind powerful, ever-evolving predictive models of our world, enabling stunning technological achievements and enriching our understanding of the universe and our place in it.

For nearly a century, the American Institute of Physics (AIP) has worked to advance, promote and serve the physical sciences community for the benefit of humanity.

As a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, AIP is committed to the preservation of physics for future generations, the success of physics students both in the classroom and professionally and the promotion of a more scientifically literate society.

A federation
We achieve more by working collectively. That’s why AIP partners with 10 Member Societies across the spectrum of physical sciences to pool, coordinate, leverage resources and support them with professional services and benefits. We’re also connected to more than a dozen affiliate societies and operate the Society of Physics Students and the Sigma Pi Sigma honors society, helping future generations of physical sciences professionals.

An institute
AIP also serves as an independent institute, advancing the physical sciences enterprise with original statistical research and analysis on economic and education trends and the history of physics. Our five-year Strategic Framework aligns institute operations with our future goals and objectives.

A publisher
AIP publishes Physics Today , which provides authoritative, engaging coverage of physical science research and its applications across all disciplines, and FYI, the leading news source for federal science spending and policy. Our partner organization, AIP Publishing , provides the global physical sciences community with a comprehensive collection of highly cited peer reviewed scientific information. AIP Publishing also publishes on behalf of several of AIP’s Member Societies and other publishing partners.

Committed to diversity
Promoting increased diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in the physical sciences is one of AIP’s core values, expressed through our TEAM-UP initiative with Member Societies and other diversity initiatives and programs , including our awards, scholarships and statistical research. Having diverse perspectives in our classrooms, laboratories, fields and front offices expands opportunities for all and leads to better decision-making and outcomes.
