AIP Welcomes New AAAS CEO, Looks Forward to Science Policy Discussions
American Association for the Advancement of Science is an affiliated society with the American Institute of Physics.
Washington, D.C., November 1, 2019 -- The American Institute of Physics congratulates Sudip Parikh as the new CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and executive publisher of the Science family of journals.
Parikh will take over at AAAS on Jan. 6, 2020, and become the 19th chief executive of AAAS. The organization is an affiliated society with AIP, a federation of local, national and international organizations representing the spectrum of the physical sciences.
“I want to congratulate Sudip Parikh on his joining AAAS and continuing the important work to further the discussion of science and science policy,” said Michael Moloney , AIP’s CEO. “His experience as a science advisor and staff for the United States Senate Committee on Appropriations will be key to the advancement of all science -- including the physical sciences at the heart of AIP’s mission.”
AIP’s mission to advance, promote and serve the physical sciences for the benefit of humanity closely aligns with AAAS’s core mission to “advance science, engineering, and innovation throughout the world for the benefit of all people.”
According to an announcement from AAAS, Parikh was chosen after a search that “was extraordinarily thorough and involved close consideration of numerous qualified and diverse candidates.” Alan Leshner, who was serving as interim CEO at AAAS, will step down in January.
As a member of AIP’s Affiliated Society program, AAAS is one of several organizations that gather to discuss areas of mutual concern about the physical sciences at the Assembly of Society Officers meeting, held annually.
“Sudip is well positioned to lead AAAS well into the future and brings significant expertise working across scientific, business and policy sectors in the United States and globally,” said Claire Fraser, president-elect of AAAS and chair of the search committee that selected Parikh, according to the AAAS announcement.
