WASHINGTON, Feb. 12, 2025 – AIP is pleased to announce Kandis Boyd’s appointment to AIP’s board of directors, effective Jan. 23.

Boyd has a far-reaching career spanning over 30 years in federal science-based operations, academia, and private sector companies. She is a fellow of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) and serves as the president of the Federal Executive Institute Alumni Association (FEIAA). In addition, she has utilized her talents in various board and council positions over the past 15 years.

“Everyone looks at the world through a different lens,” Boyd said. “I’m looking forward to sharing my perspective and experiences as a manager, leader, and administrator to help AIP advance the physical sciences and continue the path to success.”

Boyd started her career as a student intern at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, where she developed research analyses for the Tropical Ocean-Global Atmosphere Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Response Experiment (TOGA COARE). She presented her work on the project at her first AMS conference in 1995, and since then, Boyd has been working her way through the ranks to her first senior executive service position in 2020.

Throughout her career she has worked for multiple federal organizations. Her past positions have included executive officer for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service; acting and deputy Director of NOAA’s Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research, Office of Weather and Air Quality; deputy division director for the National Science Foundation; and director of Chesapeake Bay Program at the EPA.

As a 1996 graduate of Iowa State University, Boyd was the school’s first African American woman to receive an undergraduate degree in meteorology. She later earned a double master’s degree in meteorology and water resources from Iowa State University, followed by a doctorate in public administration from Nova Southeastern University. She also holds certifications in Project Management and Logistics, Transportation, and Development.

“Kandis’ appointment to the board follows on from her outstanding tenure of service with AMS,” said AIP CEO Michael Moloney. “Her extensive experience as a strategic thought leader coupled with her accomplished background in project management and nonprofit governance will heighten the efficacy of our board.”

AIP’s board of directors provides active and strategic leadership to advance the future of physical sciences. It comprises the chair, AIP CEO, corporate secretary, one director from each Member Society, and up to four at-large directors.

“It’s inspiring to work with like-minded organizations that are still unique and special in their own way,” Boyd said. “I am privileged to engage in this dynamic and evolving landscape and look forward to contributing to and gaining valuable insights with AIP.”
