NASA Authorization Act of 2018
Purpose
To authorize the programs of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for fiscal years 2018 and 2019, and for other purposes.
Summary of Selected Provisions
  • Authorizes funding levels for NASA activities, including levels for Science Mission Directorate that recommend higher funding for Planetary Science and level funding for other divisions
  • Caps funding for the development of the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope at $3.2 billion
  • Directs NASA to partner with private sector and philanthropic organizations to search for technosignatures of extraterrestrial intelligence
  • Conveys that Congress views the launch of a space-based telescope for surveying near-Earth objects as a priority
  • Requires NASA to produce a report on the use of nuclear power in space
  • Establishes a contractor “watch list” to identify contractors with a history of poor performance or with which there are financial, legal, or security concerns
