About the Winner
Melba Phillips’ research has added significantly to the knowledge of physics. A scholar, teacher, and author, she has, by inspiration and by example, touched generations of students and both illuminated the understanding and sharpened the insights of her colleagues. Her dedicated service to the physics community has been manifested in her work over the entire spectrum of societal activity, from staff officer to an elected presidency, and in her term on the Governing Board of the American Institute of Physics.
Her understanding, wisdom, vigor and unswerving devotion to high standards of excellence and educational outreach have earned her the respect and gratitude of world-wide community of scientists.
