Smoke Planning and Research Act of 2021
Purpose
A bill to authorize the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency to conduct research on wildfire smoke, and for other purposes.
Summary of Selected Provisions
- Directs the Environmental Protection Agency to establish four “Centers of Excellence for Wildfire Smoke” at universities that would conduct research on the health impacts of wildfire smoke, with a recommended annual budget of $10 million
- Recommends EPA receive $20 million annually to “increase the quality of smoke monitoring and prediction tools and techniques” and develop methods for reducing exposure to wildfire smoke, among other activities
- Recommends EPA receive $50 million annually to establish a grant program for communities to develop and implement wildfire smoke mitigation plans
