Smoke Planning and Research Act of 2021
Purpose
To authorize the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency to conduct research on wildfire smoke, and for other purposes.
Summary of Selected Provisions
  • Directs the Environmental Protection Agency to establish four “Centers of Excellence for Wildfire Smoke” at universities that would conduct research on the health impacts of wildfire smoke, with a recommended annual budget of $10 million
  • Recommends EPA receive $20 million annually to “increase the quality of smoke monitoring and prediction tools and techniques” and develop methods for reducing exposure to wildfire smoke, among other activities
  • Recommends EPA receive $50 million annually to establish a grant program for communities to develop and implement wildfire smoke mitigation plans
