Selected provisions in the original Senate bill

• Directs USGS to establish a National Volcano Early Warning and Monitoring System “to organize, modernize, standardize, and stabilize” the work of the nation’s volcano observatories
• Stipulates that modernization activities should include “the comprehensive application of emerging technologies, including digital broadband seismometers, real-time continuous Global Positioning System receivers, satellite and airborne radar interferometry, acoustic pressure sensors, and spectrometry to measure gas emissions”
• Authorizes the appropriation of “such sums as are necessary” to implement the legislation
